By utilizing an ET controller,
be it entry level or high end, water savings in the neighborhood
of 30% to 40% are attainable for ET input controllers only and as
high as 70% for online ET controllers with actual rainfall input.
This “Water Saving Calculator” the
way it has been filled in shows the following;
Column 1 shows varied water sizes from 3/4"
to 2".
Column 2 shows the projected flow rates that
this size of pipe can handle at or less than 5 fps.
Column 3 shows the number of stations (zone)
which would be run.
Column 4 shows the number of minutes for
each of the stations.
Column 5 lists the water flow in GPM per
day.
Column 6 shows the monthly water usage.
Column 7 the cost at $5 per m/gal (1,000
gallons or 4.7 lt).
Column 8, the total water for the 5 month
season (we are typically 6 mths from April thru September).
Column 9 shows the cost of water with sewer
charge included (but no other related expenses like, wear and
tear, maintenance reduction for less use, reduced grounds maintenance
expense from costly plant replacement or heath care, and others).
Column 10 and 11 demonstrates the 30% to
40% reduction by having irrigation controllers rescheduled automatically.
Typically, today's timer controllers are schedule in the spring
for summer and shut off in the fall - known as straight line
scheduling, not very water conserving. These new smart controllers
receive weather data and reschedule themselves automatically,
but do not account for rainfall in most cases so they must be
outfitted with a rain sensor and maybe even a soil moisture
sensor system.
