Urban Irrigation without City Water – by Lorne Haveruk
|

|
Bay Bloorview Children's
Centre is being torn down. A new state of the art building
right from the ground up to the 11 rooftop gardens is coming.
An elaborate
reclaimed water irrigation system has been designed. All
of the water will come from rain water collected onsite
and stored in an underground 100,000 gallon cistern.
Rooftop
gardens will be created utilizing low volume drip tubes
controlled by soil moisture sensors. The entire system will
be controlled onsite by a tipping rain bucket device. ET
data for automatic scheduling will be supplied from a local
ET weather station. Trees are watered individually with
micro bubblers while strip planter areas will utilize dripline
placed in the plant root zone area and then mulched to achieve
a high retention level resulting in a highly efficient irrigation
system.
The
irrigation mainline will be connected to the city water
supply only to be utilized if the cistern runs dry. The
cistern has been sized to supply water up to 90 days before
running out. Was their to be such a long dry spell, the
building automation system would receive a low water level
signal from a float device within the cistern tank. This
would cause the cisterns vertical turbine pump to become
non-functional. Instead, the city water supply attached
to the irrigation mainline, complete with all required water
protection devices, would be automatically opened by the
building operating system when the weather called for the
next watering cycle to occur. A check valve at the cistern
prevents the city water supply from filling the cistern
with city water. Instead, the city water will only be used
until the low water level indicator goes out once a rain
event recharges the cistern.
Sound
like a dream system? It is being closely watched to see
if it may be one of the answers to many cities growing water
supply issues. Phase 1 is reality now with phase 2 not far
behind. Will the system work as designed? Yes and no. Yes,
because the design principles I have applied are sound.
No, because the contractor is taking shortcuts. A lesson
learned here is the developer must have a qualified person
do periodic inspections or the best laid plans could be
derailed by another’s inadequacies.

Tucson, Arizona Rainwater Harvesting Conference Oct. 27 &
28/06
The Regional
ARCSA conference will focus on the management of stormwater and
rainwater to satisfy federal stormwater requirements while using
the harvested water to reduce demand and/or recharge groundwater
supplies. The conference meetings will be on the 27th of October.
Emphasis will be given to the design of sites in the pre-development
stage for beneficial water management. Homeowner projects will
also be discussed. Post-conference tours on October 28th will
take participants to rainwater and stormwater harvesting sites
around the Tucson area. Developers, engineers, architects, earth
workers and homeowners are encouraged to register.
